Southridge STEM Girls Participate in OU's GLAMS Program

Southridge girls STEM students participated in an event at the University of Oklahoma's Rawl Engineering Practice Facility called GLAMS Girls Learning and Applying Math and Science.

On March 29, Southridge Junior High girls STEM students participated in an all-day event at the University of Oklahoma's Rawl Engineering Practice Facility called GLAMS Girls Learning and Applying Math and Science, sponsored by OG&E.

The program is for 7th - 9th grade girls called Engineering Girls Learning to Apply Math and Science, or GLAMS. It provides students with an introduction and exploration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through fun, hands-on design projects with young women who are OU Engineering students. 

Students in 5th, 6th, and 7th grade this spring should apply for next year's program. The program strongly encourages Black, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian/Alaskan Native, and/or who are set to be first-generation college students in their family to apply. GLAMS is held on the OU campus and hosts approximately one hundred female students in 6th to 8th grade. During the planning phase, current engineering students in the GCoE are appointed to the GLAMS Committee to develop the theme-related STEM concepts and activities that they lead during the program (e.g., building Hermione Granger’s wand with batteries, LEDs and copper tape to demonstrate a circuit).

Students also share insight about their journeys through STEM with the participants. Additionally, around 30 students from the OU Gallogly College of Engineering and MCEE provide service as volunteers throughout the program.
